In the past two weeks, we explored various questions regarding the regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We began with a contribution by Carolin Vormann<\/em><\/a>, who examined whether press and media freedom is threatened by AI. Next, Chunhuan Li<\/em><\/a> discussed the potential of AI in policing, focusing on the risks of AI systems unintentionally incorporating biases, such as racial profiling. Last week, Mika Schieffer<\/em><\/a> shed light on the right to be offline in our digital age, raising the question: is there such a right? On Thursday, we published the Saar Blueprint from Meltem Yildirim<\/em><\/a>, which analyzed the opportunities and risks for data protection created by AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today\u2019s contribution concludes our symposium by examining the European Union\u2019s pivotal role in shaping global standards for AI regulation. Sara D’Arcy Shepherd’s analysis highlights the EU\u2019s AI Act as a regulatory milestone, demonstrating Europe\u2019s ambition to lead the \u201crace to regulate\u201d in response to the rapid advancement of AI technologies. The concept of the Brussels Effect underscores how the EU\u2019s regulatory framework could influence global markets, prompting compliance from multinational corporations and adoption by other jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In her Saar Blueprint<\/a><\/strong>, Sara D’Arcy Shepherd<\/em> examines whether the EU can establish itself as a global standard-setter in the race to regulate AI. She begins by describing the Brussels Effect across different areas of regulation, focusing on EU competition law, CE marking requirements, and the GDPR. The analysis then evaluates the ability of the recently adopted AI Act to generate a Brussels Effect, distinguishing between de jure and de facto impacts of EU regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As our symposium concludes, we reflect on Europe\u2019s potential leadership in the AI regulatory landscape and its role in shaping the digital future.
